  1. Wrap-Around
Jessie: Small detail - Steinbeck described both Cathy and Abra’s chin - what does it mean for their personalities.

Scott: C and A names - which pair of C/A is correlated?

Michelle: Does a name have anything to do with someone’s personality? Is Steinbeck using names for plot?

Finn: Why is Cal so manipulative? No influence from Cathy, where does he get it.

Kinsey: If Cal and Abra were to find out about Cathy, how would it affect the relationship.

Lindsey: When we were introduced to Abra, her head was framed like a halo. Also Aron has halo of sunshine - what does that symbolize?

Drew: Interesting that every chapter begins with description - significance?

Griffin: Yellow isn’t only Cathy - also envelope of Sam’s death, blooming yellow valley - what’s the implication?

Kennedy: Does the car provide more or less freedom.

Julia: Kudos to Bella on pre-destination - esp. w/ C and A with the Bible.

Bella: Charles didn’t really have a reason for dominance - but Cal has to find a weakness to create that feeling of dominance.

Rafa: Steinbeck uses references to himself but to the character “John” - references to his own family like Olive - why does he know about all these families?

Henry: I wanted to know about Adam maybe choosing Salinas to send his kids to school - interesting now that he was money and Samuel is gone.

Andrea: Curious about “Joe” and why he decides to disregard his own name - why does he repeat that and the significance of switching names?

  2. Lindsey: On destiny, before part 3 - Sam says he likes Aron, but doesn’t make it to the promised land - and Cal darker - but who makes it? What does that mean?

Anna: Promised land is just more significant knowledge of the world - Cal knows how to manipulate - Cal fighting with whether or not manipulation is good - Aron might not have that choice - so choice is what determines it.

Drew: Promised land as being at peace with oneself - that the boys are trying to achieve.

Griffin: Cal is an active player - curious to know what he’d want if he didn’t feel natural love. Maybe will work towards some kind of promised land.

Bella: Aron was content to be a part of his world, but Cal wanted to change it.

Griffin: Adam also pretty passive, only motivated by his father - Adam won’t be that force.

Jake: Adam tries to relate, but twins no longer impressionable - they’ve set their courses, trying to adjust them.

Griffin: Cyrus chose favorites, but Adam hasn’t yet. Love was never there to begin with - no love to be won.

Anna: Part of the reason they want to see if their mother is alive so badly. Wonder if they visit Cathy what influence she will have?

Hallie: For the parallels with the two sets of brothers - lots of similarities b/w Adam and Aron but with Charles and Cal the comparison is interesting - when they’re in the car aggression is the reason for love but Charles was just pure rage. Cal doesn’t want negative traits.

Jake: We first saw Charles’ rage when Adam won a game against Charles - but Aron never beats Cal in anything - Aron is more passive - but nothing has driven Cal over the edge.

Bella: When arguing over who would take credit for hunting - they were trying to give credit to each other instead of competing over it.

Griffin: I do think that Aron has beat Cal before, such as in fights. While Charles dominated Adam in every way, Aron and Cal each have things they can hold over each other. Don’t know if Cal dominates Aron.

Andrea: Cal wants to take it upon himself to make himself more favorable - rather than Charles who wanted to take out the relatively favorable options.

Griffin: Yeah, he looks inward, not outward.

Kinsey: What is the significance of the introduction of Abra? Maybe will help twins find Cathy? Thoughts?

Hallie: One of the first moments of interaction b/w Cal and Aron - with Cal trying to attack him - she definitely plays a dividing role and it’s the first time we see division b/w the twins. Also could be a mediator.

Griffin: Also could be the way Aron finds out about Cathy - Cal took the truth well, but Aron could be set into a rage by finding out his dad wasn’t honest for once.

Bella: For Abra vs. Cathy - both knew what they were doing (provided quote from book) timshel thing - knowing what you’re doing but doesn’t use it as much as Cathy does.

Drew: Before Abra was introduced, there was something with the color yellow (quote) - every time we see yellow, a Cathy-figure is being introduced. Also a funny name - Abra - like magic, abra kadabra. Her introduction carries a part of Cathy with her. Bring people together not manipulate.

Jake: New question/topic. When Will Hamilton brings up the car, he speaks with false enthusiasm - why does he hate Ford if it makes him rich?

Henry: The car represents change in his world and he’s not used to it or ready for it. Maybe he wants to be more similar to his father.

Hallie: And for Sam, always working hard for something that didn’t give him value. But Will realizing he wishes to be happy, not rich.

Anna: Money has driven a lot of people in the book - Cathy, Adam driven by money - and Will obviously - Steinbeck saying although money looks like a good goal, it really shouldn’t be - lots of rich and unhappy people with false lives.

    General Discussion
Henry: Lee and the twins knew lives without mothers, but while Lee’s life was very brave but Cathy’s wasn’t. What is the effect of having a mother?

Rafa: They behave in a different way when they don’t have a moth - more childish.

Jake: The whole camp was his mother. They all took on that role. No such person for the twins.

Kennedy: Twins become very curious about where their mother is - Lee had parental units - more closure. Twins only know Lee/Adam.

Griffin: Description of Cal’s hands as the only thing that could hurt him - Achilles’ Heel - what does that imply about hands?

Drew: Hands imply insecurity - shriveled up - Cathy’s influence never dies - fragment of her always there.

Jake: From last discussion - shriveling from evil for Cathy but mental and verbal labor for Cal - doesn’t want to get his hands dirty.

Lindsey: Degree of removal from the meaner side - rock or stick - less personal because he has to separate himself from violence.

Griffin: Even not suited physically to fight, trying to start a fight and be confrontational.

Bella: Not just violence/lack of violence but reminds me of Tom in some ways - dark/brooding not “hands on.”

Jake: Samuel describes Tom as fighting a struggle in his head - seems like Cal faces that too.
    Will succeed against inner darkness.

Katie: Need to have an awareness of inner darkness like Cathy - need to know about it to control it for Cal.

Hallie: One of the most interesting parts was him wanting to pray and not be mean - start to see him have a turn in what he wants. Trying to change the way he works so that he doesn’t end up like his mom.

Lindsey: Kind of like timshel - he has a choice - recognizes his agency and makes a decision for change. Be the way he wants to be.

Bella: Interesting thing going on with that as well as the names - Steinbeck suggesting pre-destiny with names, but then brings it back to timshel and choice.

Jessie: Cal seems curious - is that driven by positivity or by negativity/death of mom/Charles?

Griffin: Goal was to be loved - one thing he wanted - to be like Aron, and that’s what drives him. Does Adam influence how Cal and Aron are going to grow up given Adam had similar experiences.

Anna: Lee is also part of the reason - when Sam snapped at him Lee already saw picking favorites and loving some over others impacts brotherly relationships - Lee is the main influence on that dynamic of love.

Henry: Adam didn’t want to give for his kids what he got as a kid - doesn’t want his own kids to experience what his father but him through.
